From the mouths of babes

Today I had to bite the bullet, ignore my pain, and take Michael to the doctor. For the past week, he's been having accidents. He doesn't make it to the potty. For the last couple of days, he's been telling me he hurts INSIDE his penis. I thought maybe I could wait until Monday when I felt better to take him to his doctor. No dice. Anyway, I grabbed an ice pack for my back and took him to the weekend doctor. Michael was a champ and peed in the cup for them.

Yep - you guessed it. Urinary Track Infection. Yay. :)

Two funny things have happened since we got out of there.

We went to the drug store to get his antibiotics filled. Michael said he wanted to hand her the prescription. The girl working the counter took it from him and asked 'Is this your medicine?'. Michael said 'Yes. My penis hurts inside so this will make it better.'. We had to laugh. I mean, she ASKED so she shouldn't be surprised when a four year old starts telling her about his penis!

Right before dinner, Michael went off to the potty and I heard him yelling something to me. When I went in there, he said something about a cup. I thought maybe he was talking about the cup he had to pee in at the doctor. Nope! Turns out he had gotten one of their Dixie cups off the counter and peed in it! Then he dumped it in the potty and flushed, and threw away the cup! He says he wants to pee in cups all of the time now, so I had to explain that we only do that when doctors ask us to. I don't know if it sunk in.

Oh, poor Michael!

At least you live in the States where cranberry juice is widely available! Of course it is still not fun. But he is so grown up.

I think a lot of boys have their phases when they pee in cups. I did for sure and so did my little brother after the first experience!

They don't ship a lot of cranberry juice to Hungary? Is there just not enough demand to justify the cost? Different regions have different tastes, so maybe the acidity of cranberry isn't a local favorite.

I'm beginning to see, running a house with three boys, that just about anything that pertains to the penis is fascinating to them. Michael was super excited when he first started peeing standing up, then peeing in the backyard last weekend when we camped out, now peeing in a cup. I learn new things every day with these guys *laugh* Things that just never would have occured to a girl. :)

Cranberry juice is nearly unknown here, so only imported cranberry juice can be bought at Tesco... sometimes. But it does wonders and I really miss having easy access to it.

Well, your boys are at the age when they are starting to discover what it means to be a man!

I'm glad his UTI was diagnosed and treated before it got any worse!

I would have loved to see the look on the pharmacist's face. The weirdest thing I've ever said to a pharmacist was that Mom and I were having a prescription filled for penis cream. (Saying that was fun. Finding out that antibiotic wasn't on their HMO's formulary and cost $40? Not so much.)

I remember being quite jealous as a little burrito when I learned that boys could pee standing up and girls didn't.
