Sewing help

Argh. Frustrated. Very frustrated. I know I have some sewing friends out there. I'm having a problem.

I have a stretch crushed velvet that I'm trying to sew. I have a size 11 ball point needle (this also happened with a size 14) I'm using and I have one of two things happen EVERY time. It sews for a minute and either gets stuck in with the bottom thread or the top thread breaks.

I've tried adjusting the tension, but it doesn't seem like a tension problem. With that, it is usually only on one side. This doesn't seem to have any rhyme or reason for whether it will catch on the top or the bottom.

WTF? I just don't get why it is happening. Any ideas for things I could try?

Wait - that sounds like a great idea. I'll have to try a tear-away sheet same as I did interfacing for my buttonholes! Maybe that will work.

It hasn't really sucked the material in as much as the top thread breaking or the bottom getting twisted back in on itself (like when you finally get it to give way, there are four threads instead of just 2 - 3 came from the bottom?). The thread is cotton, so I'll have to look at my other black threads and see if I have something different.

Thanks for the ideas!
