What is indominitable spirit or Baekjul Boolgool?

Indominitable spirit is that part of a person which makes them unique, that part of a person which provides hope, strength and courage to get up and face each day with a smile.

Indominitable spirit is one of the seven tenets of Tae Kwon Do, and to me, probably the most important. It is the core that supports all else. When we are faced with hardship, indominitable spirit is what holds us up and keeps us moving forward.

Today was our annual awards banquet. Like last year, I took the boys so they could see that there are rewards for working hard and, of course, so they could play games, bowl and play laser tag *laugh*. Last year we watched all of the usual suspects get awards. You pretty much know who is going to get what, because they stand out so much in the school.

Our Sensei was up presenting awards, and I think I was touching Michael's nose to make him laugh. Scott and Matthew were across from me at the table. To hear Scott tell it, I was in my own world...listening, but not really INTO it. Probably because I thought I knew who was getting each award.

Or so I thought. Scott says my attention changed when I heard Ms. Reeve say 'and you'll understand why when you see her come up to get her award.' (remember, my leg is still in a cast) The award for Indominitable Spirit this year goes to Trish Howard.

Over the past 18 months, I have had a really rough road. Too many surgeries to count. Complications. Broken foot (twice). Learning of a lifelong auto-immune clotting disorder.

Through all of this, I've tried desperately to stay involved with Tae Kwon Do. There are things I can no longer do, but I have not quit. I will be a black belt one day.

This not only made my day, but it made the past year and a half feel like it MEANT something. I wish I had been paying enough attention to hear everything Ms. Reeve said :) This was so meaningful to me. You can't understand how much.

I guess I have to work on that Humility tenet now, huh? ;)

Yes - so true, so true. I'm still doing the happy dance for you, but I hope you don't want me to be as surprised as you, cuz after all, I pretty much knew who was going to get that one because they stand out so much in the school. Neener neener!!!
