At some point this morning, he snapped his Tooth Tunes toothbrush (All Star, Smashmouth) in half, then snapped his brother's in half. It seemed a minor thing and I thought it was a symptom more than a cause of anything.
I took them to school, and he wasn't even there 30 minutes before the vice-principal called us. Matthew had gone in and tried to get breakfast, and the cafeteria worker questioned him because they still had a flag on his account from last year. At one point, we had a problem with him having breakfast at home, then going in and buying breakfast at school. Since he wasn't hungry, he would often be late to class dawdling. The lady asked if he was sure he was supposed to have breakfast at school. He left the lunchroom. Someone saw him running out the doors to where the car dropoff line is and they ran after him. They finally caught him out by the dumpsters. Since that was a risk of harming himself, they called us in.
By the time we got to school, Mr. Watson had him calmed down and back in class. We talked for a while and went home. Then, at recess, he ran off when they were heading out there. Scott went to get him and spent a long time out in the car talking to him. He heard three names of kids that Matthew says call him names and talk about him. Scott thinks he may bring it on himself by being 'different'. He is quiet, plays by himself and doesn't try to socialize. But then Matthew told him that one particular child has hauled off and hit him in the stomach a couple of times. Unacceptable. We talked to his teacher for a while today and she's going to help us keep an eye out for things. We don't want him to become scared of school and run away because he is being bullied.
I bought new toothbrushes for the kids - new songs on Tooth Tunes.
Michael came down a little while ago and said Matthew was saying he hated me. I tried to get Matthew to talk to me, but he wouldn't look at me. He was mumbling and making Xs on his chalkboard over and over. I gave up, told him I loved him very much and gave him a kiss before coming back downstairs (a lengthy process with my hurt foot).
Matthew came down a while later into the laundry room and told me that he really loved his old toothbrush. I asked why he didn't have his old toothbrush anymore and he said it broke. I asked how it got broken and he said he got snapped in half. I asked who snapped it in half and he said he did. I tried to explain that he was responsible for the fact that his old toothbrush was gone, but that I got him a new one with a new song that he could learn to love. I thought everything was ok and told him, again, how much I loved him and that things run much smoother when he uses his words to tell us what he is upset about.
Later, Michael came down yelling that Matthew broke his new toothbrush. That broke the camel's back tonight. He snapped his new ten FUCKING dollar toothbrush in half like it was going to bring back the last ten fucking dollar toothbrush that he ALSO broke.
I PRAY tomorrow is better and that he doesn't act like this while Scott has them by himself next week.
