Fraud update

I got the first of three credit reports today in the mail. It's amazing what you see in your credit report! Scary.

What was even scarier was my history of good credit - paying as agreed, no late payments - followed up by the two most recent accounts. Two accounts that are NOT MINE!!!! There is a fourth company that checked my credit which I haven't heard from and isn't on there as issuing credit to this asshole. I'll have to call them to make sure that doesn't happen.

I wonder what would have happened if Chase hadn't realized that the address the person gave on the application was our address from over FIVE YEARS ago???? What would have happened before I even realized this was happening?

With only two fraudulant accounts on my report, it was manageable for me to call them both. I spoke with one and their fraud department had caught on and cancelled it at the end of October. I'm going to call the fraud department there and figure out what tipped them off and make sure I have all the info I can get.

The other company looks smaller (the one in the previous paragraph was Capital One!!! Hey - What's in YOUR wallet? Is it MY CREDIT CARD???????) and only has banker's hours. I'll call them first thing tomorrow morning.

I put investigations on the two accounts that weren't mine, and we'll see what happens.

I have yet to call about mine. And I admit it - I'm scared. I've got to do this though. I'm also glad I've moved... a lot.

It's better to get it over with and deal with it quickly if there is anything wrong. It could even be small things you can correct easily - for instance they had the company I work for as 'Dun Microsystems' instead of Sun. :)

The moving bit is WHY we think this happened. The only thing we could figure, since this person obviously has my social security number, my date of birth, but is using an address from over five years ago is that maybe this person lived in my old apartment and got something in the mail (or multiple things and pieced it together) with information.

However it happened, I'm glad I found out about it FAST. I never thought I would sing the praises of a credit company, but Chase Manhattan is my new friend for being dilligent about credit investigation and instead of just denying the application they called me to let me know. Not only did they tell me what was going on, but they gave me the information step-by-step on how to find out what else was going on and how to fix it.

NOW, the thing that almost made me sick was seeing all of my debt listing in one place *laugh* I've got to start working on that.
