New arrival

I am SOOOOOOOOO happy right now! This morning, I checked the oldest crested gecko egg and all was fine. Tonight, I checked and we had a little baby! I've named him/her Storm, as the parents are Blizzard and Cyclone. Bliz and Cy are about the length of my hand from palm to fingertips. Just keep that in mind when you view our first baby. Baby Storm is less than 1 day old!!!! AWWWW!

The egg, post hatching:

Some pics of Storm in the new habitat (Ignore the remnants of vermiculite on his back. I got as much as I could off.):

To give you a sense of scale, here is Storm in my hand:

Links back to when we got Cyclone and Blizzard. They were so big when I got them, and EVEN BIGGER now. Wow.

I just edited the post to add links back to the post when I got Cylcone and Blizzard. They were SO BIG even then in comparison to the baby.

I so totally and completely did not expect him to be cute. So I got my game face on - you know - the one where I look at the spawn of Alfred E. Newman and Lisa Simpson and try not to gag. But dayum - he's adorable.

Crested geckos are some of the cutest reptiles ever. I know that lizards are something cute only to those that like them, but just about everybody thinks crested geckos are cute when they see them. I think it's the 'eyelashes' :)

He's adorable. I'm not showing Vogon this post though, or else he'd have a new pet obsession. (:

Lizards actually breeding in captivity is a big deal right? It means they are happy and comfortable?

I'm not really a lizard person - but that was really cute :)

Yes, things have to be just right for breeding in captivity, but crested geckos are fairly easy. They are one of the only geckos that can be kept at room temperature and don't require extra heat lamps, undertank heaters, etc. They just need to be kept to a specific humidity, have places to climb, and a 'moist hide' where they can lay eggs (I use a tupperware container with a hole cut in the top, moist vermiculite inside).

I got lucky when I bought my two youngsters that it turned out to be a male and female. Mostly when you are buying them, they are too young to be reliably sexed. Once they get old enough to know the sex, the price generally goes up :)

I'm just fascinated with our new baby. SO CUTE.

Wow, I was suprised to see that Storm is actually cute! ;)

Hmmm, no wonder there's been no comment in your journal about SEC football this weekend...you've been too busy 'birthing babies!' :D

I'll have to get a clear picture of Storm's face. :)

There hasn't been a comment because we played like SHIT. They better get it together for next weekend, that's all I have to say. Next weekend is the only game that really matters *laugh*
