WHEE

You know that feeling when you look in the pocket of a coat you haven't worn in a while and find a $10 bill?

Quite some time ago, I had looked in the Unclaimed Property web site from my home town, and found that my mother had 'at least $25' (they don't give the actual amount) from an insurance company when she closed out my old life insurance policy. I printed out the claim form, gave it to her and explained how to claim. I then promptly forgot about it.

Fast forward to today. I went to check on that site (I do it regularly), and saw she never claimed. I printed it out AGAIN and gave her a lecture - it is MORE than $25. Might be $26, might be $500. You won't know until you claim it. Why in the world would you NOT do it?

Anyway, I thought I would check around in the other places we have lived. I looked at Mississippi for Scott and myself. Nothing. I looked in Louisiana for Scott, his dad, his brother, his grandparents, etc. No dice. Then I checked Texas for Scott and myself.

The insurance group from the company I used to work for? I have $250 sitting there. They will take $2.50 out of the total for 'processing' and then send me the check. I printed out the info, gave them the documentation they needed, and am mailing it out.

What a great day when you just FIND $250!!!!!

I listened to that on iTunes the other night. Pretty cool.

Yes, very kewl about the $247.50. Too bad I had to go to the grocery store today and spend $280. I guess it means FREE GROCERIES! (and ink cartridges for the printer, and a pair of shoes, and underwear, and about 40 pounds of meat for the Atkins hubby, and all the regular stuff I have to buy every couple of weeks)

Go to the Alabama State Comptroller web site, and go into the Unclaimed Property section. Every state comptroller pretty much has one of these. I know I did Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas today. You can enter your last name, if that results in too many hits, try just your first initial, if that's too many, put in your first name. Most have the address and city of the person that didn't receive money from a company, but some of them might have just a name. If you click for more details, you can usually identify whether it might be you or not.

Often, this happens if you have moved. The one I found was for the address I lived at about 6 1/2 years ago. The one for my mom was back in 1997 they tried to send to a house we hadn't lived in since 1979 - and had moved four times since then.

If you find something under your name, it clicks to where you print out the claim form, your info is auto-populated, and you just send in copied of your driver's license, social security card, and something that shows you lived at that address (bill or other 'official' mailing). Then they take their fee (most states are nothing between 0-$100, 1% between 100-500, and 1.5% 500-5000.
